This stunning Scottish wool tartan cloak is truly one-of-a-kind and inspired by the 16th century highlander woman’s arisaidh. The arisaidh was made by sewing two lengths of 30” wide plaid together down the middle and varied in length depending on the height of the individual (our arisaidhs are a managable 4 yards). It was worn belted around the waist and any extra fabric could be pinned at the breast and worn up as a hood in wet or cold weather.
The excess could also be rolled and tied about the waist or tucked into the belt. I am not sure that the women would wear the plaid on one shoulder and under the arm as my pictures show, but the effect is familiar to most people and absolutely gorgeous!
The arisaidh could also be worn alone over a long chemise, as it is long and wide enough to make a skirt and still be worn pinned at the breast. The arisaidh is easily enhanced with our wool plaid skirt that can be worn tucked into a belt to show an underskirt (both skirts are available on our skirts page), or wear with a corset for a different look. There are many ways to wear the arisaidh! I have taken some pictures to show the variety possible to give you some inspiration and get you started on discovering your own unique style.
